Hello,

If I may ask a silly question, how does one actually wear the kesa? Does it matter how it is tied? I have seen some that have ropes rather than ties, are these better? Should I always keep my left elbow bent?

One wears the kesa according to two styles: Sojiji style leaves one of the corners hanging down, Eiheiji style style recommand stucking the corner under the fabric over the left shoulder. The kesa should always be wrapping your left shoulder, if the weather is cold you might cover the two shoulders or even wearing it as it covers your head ( you may come across traditionnal pictures of Daruma sitting with a kesa on his head). The way it is tied matters, generally, you get three bits of string or material hanging down representing the three jewels. In the nyoho e kesa style, it is important to follow the instructions carefully as to where to sew the ties and how they should be made. keeping you elbow bend helps the kesa not to slip and it is very useful.

It appears these instructions are for the Eiheiji style.

I have a kesa given me by a Chinese practitioner and it is rather small for that method of tying. I will endeavour to follow your instructions on making a kesa. Thank you very much.

Hello, I just discovered your blog - are you still blogging?
After training at Aichi Nisodo from 2000 to 2004, and studying sewing with Okamoto Sensei, I seem to have somehow ended up being the sewing specialist here in Brazil, where I live.
I didn't know enough Japanese to be able to learn about the history of the Kesa and also didn't get to learn how to calculate the sizes for 9-strip and on up. I need to sew a 9-strip kesa...
Can you help with more information - both about calculating sizes for dai-e and also about history?
